As many of you know, Joe Wood has been debilitated with a back injury from a fall that occured several years ago. Due to complications of that fall, he 's been living and performing with extreme pain in his lumbar for the past 7 years. Over time, it became more difficult to stand up straight, let alone carry the weight of the guitar, amp and perform with the Joe Wood tenacity we all know and love. Taking it's toll on Joe, a second correcfive surgery became necessary on May 5, 2010.
Gratefully, the surgery itself was successful. However, while hospitalized, Joe Wood lost the ability to walk for three days and was kept for observation for ten days and nights at Long Beach Memorial (where he was born). It wasn't easy in the hospital and the immediate weeks following were very slow going. A second surgery is on the immediate horizon to repair the right hip and its nerve damage . Thanks to water therapy and a mild form of yoga, (yes, Joe Wood did yoga), a full recovery is expected and he is now back to playing music beginning July 1, 2010.
We fellow artists and musicians realize time off for a surgery is income lost for the duration. AND THE MEDICAL BILLS add up along with the daily cost of living. And, like all of us, artists have a hard time asking for help. So, we are forcing this on Joe, LITERALLY! But, Joe is 1st to step up to lend his legendaqry talents (music and art) or his name to countless fundraising efforts, club openings, artists coalitions and continues to do so with an open door and open heart. His drive to help others is ongoing and Joe Wood shows up whenever asked. It's just part of who he is, a side many don't get to see. But, WE have!
